Each week, parents access the parent support conference call using a toll free number and pass code. Facilitated by the Phoenix Outdoor family therapist, parents have an open forum to discuss their feelings, share common experiences, and discuss after care planning. On occasion, a PowerPoint presentation is used to help communicate information. The parents can link to the call using their computer to view the slides.
Discussions are always lively and informative with topics ranging from how to write effective letters to their child, appropriately working with their educational consultant, and understanding the therapeutic process. Former students or parents are sometimes invited as guest speakers to help parents gain insight about the results of going through a wilderness experience and the value of after care planning.
Phoenix Outdoor is continually evaluating ways to provide better communication and support for its families and the conferencing series has proven to be of significant value in this process. At each graduation, parents fill out feedback forms and rate the parent support group teleconference as one of the most valuable tools in the program.
