Educational Consultants

What is an Educational Consultant? An Educational Consultant is a paid professional who works with parents and their child to make recommendations regarding educational decisions. Many parents who send their child to a wilderness therapy program have been referred by an educational consultant who recognizes wilderness therapy as an essential first step in stabilizing a child's situation. The educational consultant travels extensively to schools, treatment centers, short-term intensive programs, and post-secondary programs. As a result, they are in the best position to make recommendations for further therapeutic care should it be determined that the child is not ready to return to his or her home environment.

How will an Educational Consultant know what is best for my child? The Educational Consultant will meet with you, and possibly your child, to discuss the situation, explore realistic goals, and develop strategies to reach those goals. She or he will review relevant education, psychological, and medical reports and contact professionals who have worked with your child. The Educational Consultant may request that Phoenix Outdoor complete intellectual, educational, or psychological testing to gain further understanding about your child's current functioning. The Phoenix therapist helps the educational consultant understand your child's needs based on his or her observations of your child throughout the program.

How do I locate an Educational Consultant? Phoenix Outdoor will recommend educational consultants who are in your area and have experience working with adolescents referred to wilderness therapy programs. Many educational consultants are members of the Independent Educational Consultants Association, which provides a network of information regarding schools and training opportunities www.educationalconsulting.org/about.html.
